There are more than 500 political prisoners in Russia, many of whom were prosecuted for opposing the Russia-Ukraine war.
The prisoners' only permitted means of communication with the world outside is through handwritten mail. Letter-writing events such as this are held on a monthly basis internationally, signalling defiance to the Putin regime while offering words of comfort to the detained.
One of many political prisoners is Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist, Alexei Navalny. On January 17, 2021, Navalny returned to Russia after having been poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent and being treated in Germany. Upon arrival in Russia, Navalny was immediately arrested. He is currently sentenced to 19 years in a remote prison camp called "Polar Wolf" in the Arctic Circle. Photo credit: Guilhem Baker/LNP
