Defendants Rhian Graham, 29, Milo Ponsford, 25, Jake Skuse, 32, and Sage Willoughby, 21, are due before Bristol Magistrates’ Court for their first hearing today. They have been charged with criminal damage in connection with damage to the statue of slave trader Edward Colston which was pulled down during a Black Lives Matter protest on June 7 2020 and then thrown into Bristol Harbour. Police launched an appeal to trace suspects after the event and ten people were located. Six people accepted a caution while four were referred to the CPS. The statue was later retrieved by Bristol City Council who say that the damage is costed at £3,750. Police have warned anyone planning to protest at the court hearing that they will be breaking the lockdown laws which prohibit public gatherings of more than two people to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
