  • © Licensed to London News Pictures. 08/06/2018. Bristol, UK. Bristol artist LUKE JERRAM stands by his new sculpture "Inhale", his newest piece which is unveiled this week for Bristol's Festival of Nature. Jerram's Inhale sculpture is designed to make the damaging effects of air pollution visible to everyone. It is three metres high and represents a diesel soot particle, actual size one micron but magnified 3 million times. The sculpture is made out of coal, with pyrite and calcite representing larger particles such as from vehicle disc brakes, and tiny bits of glitter representing tiny chemicals in diesel soot, some of which are thought to be carcinogenic. Jerram said the inspiration for the piece came from the recent Volkswagen diesel scandal and a friend whose child suffers from asthma. He chose diesel soot as the focus of the artwork as diesel vehicles are a significant contributor towards air pollution in the UK and in Bristol, air pollution is thought to contribute to five deaths a week. The sculpture is making its first public appearance as part of the Festival of Nature in Bristol on the weekend of June 9-10, and has been commissioned by the University of the West of England as part of its Our City Our Health project, which aims to draw attention to the health impacts of poorly designed cities. A composite image (top image taken on 22 March and bottom image taken on 24 March) shows that Texaco petrol station in north London sells unleaded petrol at 165.9 pence per litre and regular diesel at 177.9 pence per litre despite the chancellor’s announcement of a 5 pence per litre fuel duty cut. In his spring statement, on Wednesday 23 March, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a 5 pence per litre cut to fuel duty until March 2023, to help motorists struggling with record fuel prices. According to some fuel retailers, the cut of 5 pence in fuel duty will mean that they suffer losses and therefore motorists are unlikely to see an immediate reduction in the price of petrol and diesel.
