  • © Licensed to London News Pictures; 23/06/2021; Wraxall, North Somerset, UK. FILE PICTURE dated 03/04/2015 of a male African bull elephant named M'CHANGA (left), then aged 6, with another elephant enjoying treats such as brussel sprouts hidden in the pile of sawdust at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm. The zoo farm announced yesterday that they have launched an investigation after M'Changa now aged 12 was killed last week after an incident with another bull elephant. The zoo says that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday 18/06/2021 when another bull elephant went into the area where M’Changa was asleep and an attack followed that left M’Changa with fatal injuries. The other two bull elephants at the zoo, Shaka and Janu, were unharmed. The zoo has launched an investigation into the incident and is reviewing the future of their elephant programme. The announcement of M'Changa's death comes a day after news that new laws could stop new elephants from being brought to UK zoos and safari parks in future. The Government is to receive a report on the welfare of elephants in captivity which is believed to advise against keeping elephants in zoos as it causes them mental illness and other physical issues such as arthritis and the spaces in which they are kept are too small. New laws may say that as captive elephants die out they cannot be replaced. Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm has one of the largest elephant facilities in the UK and Europe and their Elephant Eden area has been commended for best practice with specialist elephant keepers, 20 acres of space to roam and extensive efforts made for enrichment and sustaining healthy and active elephants who play an important role as a male population that can be moved to other zoos as breeding bulls to contribute to breeding programmes. • © Licensed to London News Pictures;23/06/2021; Wraxall, North Somerset, UK. FILE PICTURE dated 03/04/2015 of a male African bull elephant named M'CHANGA, then aged 6, blowing sawdust while enjoying treats such as brussel sprouts hidden in the pile of sawdust at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm. The zoo announced yesterday that they have launched an investigation after M'Changa now aged 12 was killed last week after an incident with another bull elephant.
