  • © Licensed to London News Pictures; 16/09/2020; Bath, UK. Canal going boats are seen grounded in the mud on the river Avon in Bath. Canal boats were evacuated and some boats sunk on the river Avon at Twerton after the sluice gates failed yesterday evening (15 September) and the water level dropped dramatically. The Fire Service assisted. The Canal and River Trust have issued a statement saying a drop in water level on the River Avon was caused by a failure of the Environment Agency’s sluice gates and that the sudden and dramatic drop in levels meant that it was impossible to give warning to the boaters. The Canal and River Trust say they understand the difficulties faced by the EA in repairing the sluice and this is the second time this has happened, so they are looking to the EA to find a solution as a matter of urgency. Two barges, one housing a floating cafe, have sunk in Bristol docks with just the top of the cafe sign visible above the water and the shape of the cafe seen below the surface. The floating Greenshank Cafe and its sister barge Redshank built in 1936, part of the Bristol Packet fleet and moored near to the SS Great Britain, both sank last night at about 3am. Divers will examine the boat underwater on 16 June before it can be raised with airbags and an assessment made of the damage and whether the barge can operate again as a cafe. As the story unfolds it reveals the attempts of a sailor to hear the music of the thousand bells which were lost to the depths. .The installation will open on May 25 and is free entry. .The glass bells used in the installation have all been individually produced at the Glassblobbery, Wales, and will hang with nylon strings in the nave of the former church. They do not have a clapper, creating a visual metaphor that matches the narrated legend, which tells about the lost music of the bells in the depths of the ocean. • (c) Licensed to London News Pictures 22/05/212.A thousand cast glass bells evoking a visual quality of water will be suspended in the nave of St MaryÕs Church, York, this spring. .'The Temple of a Thousand Bells', by Laura Bel?m, is inspired by an ancient legend about a temple on an island that sinks into the ocean.
